Dichang River Embankment Protection: Charaideo Water Resources Department Undertakes Flood-Control Works Since 2022

DVNA NEWS (Delhi Voice News Agency) portal’s owner and journalist Rita alias Richa Sharma observed and interacted with riverside villagers during her visit to villages along the Dichang River in Charaideo district, Assam, in September 2026.

During the field visit, local riverside people were interviewed regarding the condition of the Dichang River, its embankments and the flood-control measures being undertaken in vulnerable locations. The interactions provided an on-ground view of how riverbank protection and flood-management works have been carried out in the area.

According to the field observations, multiple dynamic flood-control and embankment-protection works have been undertaken at critical points along the Dichang River. These works include the use of Zeo bags and other river-protection processes intended to strengthen vulnerable sections of the embankment and reduce the risk of flood-related damage.

The observed works have been carried out through the Charaideo district Water Resources Department under different flood-control and river-protection initiatives. The field observations indicate that such works have been undertaken at critical locations from around 2022 and continued through the subsequent years up to 2026, with government funding and assistance, including ADB-supported funds and other applicable sources.

The Dichang River is an important part of the local river system, and communities living along its banks remain directly connected with the condition of the river and its embankments. During the September 2026 visit, riverside residents shared their observations about the river, embankment conditions and the flood-protection measures being implemented in their villages.

The use of protective measures at vulnerable locations reflects an approach focused on strengthening critical stretches before severe flood situations can cause extensive damage. Embankment protection, riverbank treatment and other flood-control measures can play a role in protecting nearby villages, agricultural areas, roads and other local infrastructure from the impact of high water levels and river-related flooding.

DVNA NEWS observed that the continuing implementation of flood-control works by the Water Resources Department is an important part of the broader flood-management efforts in Charaideo district. The works observed during the field visit also highlight the importance of regular monitoring and maintenance of vulnerable embankment sections, particularly in areas where rivers can change their course or place pressure on existing protective structures.

The September 2026 field visit by DVNA NEWS therefore provided an opportunity to document both the government’s ongoing flood-control interventions and the experiences of people living close to the Dichang River.

The field observations further indicate that government-funded flood-protection initiatives, including works supported through different funding mechanisms and ADB-related assistance, have been used for river and embankment protection in the district. Continued attention to vulnerable points, timely maintenance and strengthening of protective structures remain relevant for reducing the potential impact of future flood events on riverside communities.
