Centre Approves ₹2,117.85 Crore SDRF Assistance for Flood-Affected States; Assam Gets ₹379.35 Crore

New Delhi: The Government of India has approved advance financial assistance of ₹2,117.85 crore from the Centre's share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for flood-affected states during the 2026 southwest monsoon.

The approval was announced by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on August 1, 2026, as the Centre continued its response to flood situations reported across several states. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the assistance is intended to strengthen ongoing relief, rescue and response measures in the affected states.

The financial assistance covers seven states affected by the monsoon situation. Of the total amount, Arunachal Pradesh has been sanctioned ₹44.55 crore as an advance of the first instalment of the Central share of SDRF for the financial year 2026-27.

Assam has been sanctioned ₹379.35 crore as an advance of the first instalment. The amount comes at a time when several parts of the state have faced significant flood-related challenges during the monsoon season.

Gujarat has been approved ₹500 crore as an advance of the first instalment, while Maharashtra has also been approved ₹500 crore as an advance of its first instalment of the Central share of SDRF.

Himachal Pradesh, which had already received the first instalment of SDRF for 2026-27, has been sanctioned ₹193.95 crore as an advance of the second instalment of the Central share.

Odisha, which had also received its first instalment, has been approved ₹500 crore as an advance of the second instalment.

According to the PIB release, the advance assistance was approved in view of the urgent requirement for resources for relief measures. For Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat and Maharashtra, the advance release of the first instalment was approved by relaxing documentary requirements under the applicable guidelines.

The Centre has also been monitoring the flood situation in coordination with the respective State Governments. The Union Government said that assistance has included the pre-deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and logistical support from the Ministry of Defence wherever required.

Inter-Ministerial Central Teams have been deployed to assess flood-related damage in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Assam witnessed two IMCT visits in view of the severity of its flood situation. On the request of the Nagaland Government, an IMCT was also being constituted for the state to assess the situation and damage.

The SDRF is the principal fund available to State Governments for meeting immediate relief requirements following notified disasters. The Ministry of Home Affairs has separately clarified that disaster management and the disbursal of relief assistance at the ground level are primarily the responsibility of the concerned State Governments. The Centre supplements state efforts through financial and logistical support, while additional assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) can be considered in disasters of severe nature following the prescribed assessment process.

For Assam, the ₹379.35 crore advance is particularly significant in the context of the state's recurring exposure to monsoon floods and river-related challenges. The state's flood response involves coordination among district administrations, disaster management authorities, rescue agencies and other departments responsible for infrastructure and public services.

The latest central assistance also reflects the financial mechanism through which states receive advance resources during an ongoing disaster situation, allowing relief and response activities to proceed without waiting for the completion of all subsequent assessment procedures.

The total ₹2,117.85 crore approved for the seven states is therefore intended to strengthen immediate response operations and provide additional financial resources to state authorities dealing with the effects of the 2026 monsoon floods.

Nepal Floods: A Separate Regional Development

The Nepal flood situation mentioned in the original material should be treated as a separate regional disaster development rather than being combined with the August 1 SDRF announcement.

UNICEF reported on August 28, 2026, that flash floods that struck Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts on August 26 had affected at least 17,000 children. UNICEF reported that an estimated 332 people had died at that point, including at least 14 children, while hundreds remained missing and search operations continued.

The Nepal situation demonstrates the wider humanitarian consequences that severe monsoon and flash-flood events can create across South Asia. However, figures relating to Nepal should not be added to the Indian SDRF announcement unless they are being reported separately with their respective sources and dates.

For India, the August 1 PIB announcement specifically concerns the release of ₹2,117.85 crore from the Central share of SDRF to seven flood-affected states and the government's ongoing relief and damage-assessment measures.
