CBI Moves Delhi High Court Against Liquor Policy Acquittal; Departmental Probe Ordered on CBI Officers

In a major development in the 2022 Delhi Excise Policy case, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court presided over by Special Judge Jitendra Singh acquitted Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, K. Kavitha and 20 others, observing lack of cogent evidence and no prima facie criminal intent.

The court termed conspiracy allegations as baseless and failing judicial scrutiny. Simultaneously, the trial court directed a departmental inquiry against certain officers of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Challenging the discharge order as ā€œpatently illegal and perverse,ā€ the CBI has filed a 974-page criminal revision petition before the Delhi High Court, arguing that crucial aspects of the investigation were ignored. The case pertains to the now-scrapped 2021 excise policy introduced by the Aam Aadmi Party government, which was withdrawn following allegations of irregularities.

The probe was earlier ordered by Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.

Delhi Voice News Agency observes that the legal and political battle surrounding the case may have wider political implications.
